Competency trends
See how a learner's 1–5 competency ratings have moved over time, and where else those ratings show up.
Your words may differ. Each workspace can choose its own words: a class might be a cohort, program or group, a learner a participant, trainee or new hire, a session a module or lesson. These guides use the default words. The steps are the same whatever your workspace calls them. Change your workspace's words
Every time a trainer logs an observation with a competency and a 1–5 rating, Skovrum keeps it. Competency trends on a learner's profile turns those ratings into a small chart per competency, so you can see at a glance whether someone is getting better at handling difficult customers, say, or slipping.
Find it
Open the learner's profile. Competency trends is on the Overview tab, once the learner has at least one rated observation.

Each card shows:
- The competency, in its color.
- The latest rating, such as 4/5. Hover over it to see its meaning, such as Exceeding.
- How many ratings there are, and their spread, such as 4 ratings · 2–5 / 5.
- A line from the first rating to the latest, with the dates underneath. Ratings given on the same day are averaged into one point.
A line needs ratings on two different days. Until then the card says, for example, Rated Sep 3 · one more rating starts the trend, or All rated Aug 27 · a rating on another day starts the trend.
The trends cover every rated observation you can see about the learner, across all their classes, newest included as soon as it's saved.
What the ratings mean
| Rating | Means |
|---|---|
| 1 · Needs Improvement | Needs close guidance and extra support |
| 2 · Developing | Building the fundamentals; inconsistent |
| 3 · Meeting Expectations | At the expected level for this point in training |
| 4 · Exceeding | Consistently above expectations, growing independence |
| 5 · Exemplary | Fully independent; sets the standard |
To add a rating, log an observation with Obs, choose a Competency and click a number. See Take notes during a session.
Where else ratings show up
- The class report. Observations by Competency lists each competency with its number of observations, learners and average rating for the class. See The class report.
- Handoff packets. A learner's strengths are competencies whose latest rating is 4 or 5. Gaps are those whose latest rating is 2 or lower, or that were rated 2 or lower in the last 30 days. See Handoff packets.
- AI summaries. Ratings from shared observations are part of what the AI reads. See What AI sees.
The competencies themselves (their names, colors and which classes use them) are set up by an Admin. See Competencies.
